Mofi Electronics is introducing a new floorstanding loudspeaker, the SourcePoint 888, created by renowned designer and builder Andrew Jones.

The SourcePoint 888 gets its name from the amount of use of three 8-inch drivers in it. Two 8-inch, newly developed woofers were added to the coaxial broadband driver used in the award-winning SourcePoint 8 monitor, which featured a double magnet, paper pulp diaphragm and soft dome tweeter. This made it possible to create a 3-way speaker characterized by exceptional bass extension and powerful dynamics. The woofer section operates below 130 Hz, relieving the coaxial driver of producing the lowest bass, and allowing it to concentrate on reproduction of mid and high frequencies providing better clarity and detail in the sound. A three-way crossover combines the work of the drivers using carefully selected crossover frequencies and filter slopes. It provides smooth switching between the reproduced bands so as to minimize on-axis and off-axis anomalies in the overall sound.

The new woofers use two opposing neodymium magnets in a configuration using a short coil in a long slot. The magnetic field is therefore completely uniform along the moving coil, resulting in a very linear and precisely controlled force driving the diaphragm. In addition, each driver in the SourcePoint 888 operates in an individually sized, isolated chamber of optimal size, so that the rigidity of the enclosure is greatly increased, further reducing its resonances. Dual solid speaker sockets are used, providing bi-wire and bi-amp.

As Andrew Jones said, "My goal with the SourcePoint 888 is to improve the technology and sound reproduction quality of the SourcePoint 8, thereby taking it to an even higher level."

To achieve this, a floorstanding column was designed with ports on the rear helix to accommodate three 8-inch drivers. With the SourcePoint 888, Andrew Jones continues MoFi Electronic's mission to create premium components that honor the Mobile Fidelity brand's studio heritage and help create a complete chain from source to output that adheres to the company's concept of reproducing sound with precision, clarity and fidelity.
